The celebrated Hindu pilgrim centre of Sringeri is the Abode of Gods, of the Acharyas and of Natures Grace. Sanctified by Adi Sankara (788 AD-820 AD), the great exponent of Advaita philosophy, this sacred place nestles amidst lush green hills and valleys of the Western Ghats in Chikmagalur district in Karnataka. The holy river Tunga with its crystal-clear water winds its way quietly through Sringeri.
Sage Vibandaka and his son Rishya Sringa, who performed Putrakameshti Yaga (to beget a son) for King Dasharata, are believed to have had their hermitages here. Hence the place was originally known as Sringagiri.
The shrines of Devi Sarada, the Goddess of Learning, and Sri Vidya Sankara Theertha, who lived and entered samadhi here, stand glorious monuments to our culture and learning. A recently constructed bridge, known as Vidya Theertha Sethu, connects these shrines with Narasimhavana, the Abode of Jagadguru Sri Bharati Theertha Mahaswamigal of Dakshinamnaya Sri Sarada Peeta.
