Chintaman Ganesh Temple Chintaman Ganesh is the biggest temple of Lord Ganesha in Ujjain. This temple is is located about 7 km far south-westerly to the Ujjain town. Chintaman or Bade Ganeshji Ka Mandir is located close to the tank of the Mahakaleshwar Temple and right in front of you stands a gigantic sculpture of one of the most worshipped Gods in India - Lord Ganesha.

The temple was built sometime around the 11th and 12th century, and so, holds a historical significance as well. Chintaman Ganesh Temple is dedicated to Lord Ganesh – the Lord of beginnings. As per the beliefs, Lord Ganesh himself came to the earth to build this temple. The garbhgriha of the temple houses an idol of Lord Ganesh which is believed to be self-manifested. The captivating structure of the ancient temple features convolutedly carved pillars.

Chintaman Ganesh Temple is believed to be of considerable antiquity. The site is adored by the two wives of Lord Ganesha, Riddhi and Siddhi that are placed on the either side of the Lord.The temple also embraces the idol of Lord Vishnu in its vicinity. Here, Lord Ganesha and Lord Vishnu are worshipped together with great devotion. Chintamani is a magical stone told in mythology. It fulfills our wishes immediately as we thought of them. As Lord Ganesh in this temple behaves as a Chintamani, he is called as Chintamani ganesh / Chintaman ganesh. He is also called as Chinta haran ganesh as he removes all the Chintas (sorrows) of the devotees.

People around Ujjain will give first invitation of their marriage to this Ganesh. It is believed that he will remove all the obstacles in marriage and bless the couple. New vehicles are taken to this temple, so that no accidents will occur while riding on them.The artistically carved pillars in the assembly hall date back to the Paramara period. Worshippers throng to this temple because the deity here is traditionally known as Chintaharan Ganesh meaning 'the assurer of freedom from worldly anxieties'.
