Katil is 80 kms from Kundapur, on the banks of the river Nandini. It has a famous temple dedicated to Durga Parameshwari. Pilgrims enter the sanctum through the Dwajasthamba Mandapa. After worshipping the silver covered flagmast, the devotees proceed to the sanctum of Devi Durga, who is a Swayambu Linga (self manifested), covered with gold. Also installed in the sanctum is an awe inspiring image of the Goddess in sitting posture holding Shanku and Chakra in Her two upper hands and showing Abhaya and Varadamudra in Her two lower hands. It is customary to perform Abhisheka to the Goddess with tender coconut water. This, it is believed, is in order to cool down the Devi, who was in a fierce mood after killing Arunasura. Offerings Devotees throng the Durga parameshwari temple on Fridays and during Navaratri festival. Annadhaana (offering of food) is a major vow devotees undertake to perform in this shrine. This offering takes place practically every day. Tulaabhaaram (weighing oneself against various items) is also done by devotees. Performing Yakshaghana (Karnatakas dance form) is another important vow several groups undertake. These are performed in villages surrounding the temple.
