Each of the better hotels in Srinagar has its own restaurants, generally serving Indian, Continental and Kashmiri food. These restaurants, besides serving residents of the hotel, are also open to outsiders.
Those restaurants not attached to hotels are located largely on the Boulevard, Shervani Road, Lambert Lane an Lal Chowk. Shamyana on the Boulevard, Ruby in Lambet Lane and Mughal Darbar and Ahdoos on Shervani Road and Juniper in Lal Chowk are well known for their Kashmiri food.
Solace and Tao Café on Shervani Road and Shamyana on the Boulevard are just three examples of garden cafes - all three serve meals as well. Alka Salka on Shervani Road and Lhasa on the Boulevard are Chinese restaurants.
And although vegetarianism as a concept is not popular in Kashmir, there are some restaurants - both attached to hotels and independent - that cater to the large number of orthodox vegetarians who holiday in Kashmir.
Shamyana for example has a separate kitchen and restaurant on its premises for vegetarian food, Sunshine Hotel on the Boulevard has a Gujarati restaurant serving thali meals;
Surti in Lal Chowk also serves Gujarati food: Grand on Shervani Road serves pure vegetarian food.
Likewise in the Dalgate Kohan Khan area and on the Boulevard are hotel, mainly low budget, which cater exclusively to groups from Gujarat or from Bengal, and the accent is on regional cooking.
Amira Kadal and Dalgate have inexpensive eateries where you can get simple, well-cooked meals. There are a number of bakeries at Dalgate and Shervani.
Some of them, in addition to patties and pastries, serve Kashmiri breads like ‘sheermal' and ‘baqerkhani' without which no Kashmiri breakfast is complete.
Glocken Bakery on the corner of Auqaf Building, Dalgate, has delicious confectionery, apple pie and breads of every variety.
