Pandharpur is located on the western bank of the Bhima River, which is locally called the Chandrabhaga (crescent moon). For devotees of Vitthala, this river is as holy as the Ganges. Along the riverbank are fourteen important ghats, or bathing places. Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu stayed in Pandharpur for 11days. He took darshan of Lord Vitthala and bathed in the Chandrabhaga River. Upon meeting Sri Ranga Puri, one of Madhavendra Puri's disciples, He discovered that his brother, Vishwaripa, had passed away and attained samadhi in Pandharpur.
