Allahabad lies 135 km west of Varanasi in the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh and is at the confluence of the Ganga (also Ganges), Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati River, the point of their mingling known as Sangam. Also known by its old name of Prayag, the city is an educational hub and a great pilgrimage center, especially the world-famous Kumbh Mela .
According to Hindu mythology, the land was chosen by Lord Brahma, the creator, for 'Prakrishta Yajna'. Since then, the city was known as 'Prayag' and was believed to be blessed by gods. Foreseeing the sanctity of Allahabad, the place was named as 'Tirth Raj' by Lord Brahma, which means King of all Pilgrimage Centres.
Thus, the city was the heart of the Indian Freedom Movement with Anand Bhawan being its epicentre. It was in this beautiful city that the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi proposed his program of non-violent resistance against the British to liberate India.
Allahabad, today, is an important city where history, culture and religion create a magical confluence .... much like the sacred rivers that caress this blessed land.
Being a city with a rich history, Allahabad offers many sightseeing options to the tourists. History buffs would have a great time visiting the Allahabad Fort and Khusrau Bagh while the spiritually inclined would find peace of mind at the ghats of the Sangam, Patalipuri Temple and Hanuman Mandir. Besides, there are various places that are associated with India's freedom struggle like Anand Bhawan and Swaraj Bhawan.
